A few weeks ago I started watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel—a show so wonderful I feel I’ve wasted the past 7 years since it premiered. I love the clothes, interiors, the dialogue, the New York of it all, and of course the characters. But of all the characters and their dynamics there are two people I can’t stop thinking about: Midge and Joel.

The story takes off as it’s revealed that Joel has been cheating on his wife Midge and the two decide to separate. In the first episode we get a glimpse of their life together before their marriage disintegrates. Joel is an aspiring and flailing comedian. He relies on Midge to leverage her charm and wit in order to secure him a spot at clubs, fine tune his act, and basically keep shit in order.

You can see in that first episode that Midge is under the impression the two of them are a team and that she’s wrong. I’ve been under that impression before, and I was also wrong.
